In 2005, Judd Apatow wrote, produced, and directed one of the funniest comedies of that year, The 40-Year-Old Virgin. With Steve Carell as the star (and co-creator), the movie followed his character, Andy Stitzer, who was still a virgin at 40 years old.

While everyone around him seemed to sleep with each other with little effort, Andy couldn’t bring himself to do it with the women in his life. Andy eventually fell for a woman named Trish (Catherine Keener) but had to come to terms with his secret life as a virgin. The movie had some of the funniest quotes of the year and earned over $170 million at the box offices. The movie also won awards for the actors’ performances and lines.


Hulk (2003)

In 2003, Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures released Hulk. The movie was based on the famous comic by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and showed Bruce Banner’s (aka Hulk’s) birth story and origin.

After a lab accident went wrong, Bruce transformed into a massive and strong green creature who couldn’t be tamed. He quickly became one of the strongest Avengers. The movie was given generally positive reviews and starred big names like Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, and Sam Elliott.

Johnny Depp transformed into a leader of a gang, James “Whitey” Bulger in BlackMass. The movie was based on the non-fiction book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob.

When FBI agent John Connelly went back to the Boston area, he ran into his old childhood friend, Whitey. With Connelly being an agent and Whitey being a part of a gang, the two teamed up to take down a rival gang that caused problems for both of them. Depp went on to win awards for his portrayal of the real-life gangster and the Blockbuster made almost $100 million at the box office. It’s critically acclaimed and viewed as one of the best gangster movies.
