YEAR. >> POPCORN IS POPPING, IT’S THE END OF THE YEAR, FAMILIES GETTING TOGETHER, AND ACTUALLY, THIS IS WHEN SOME OF THE BEST MOVIES IN THE YEAR COME OUT. THEY WILL BE IN THEATERS NEAR YOU, OR ACTUALLY, ON ALMOST ANY SCREEN. FORTUNATELY, YOU ALSO HAVE PEOPLE LIKE TY BURKE, A LONG TIME BOSTON GLOBE FILM CRITIC WHO HAS LAUNCHED HIS OWN NEWSLETTER. >> I STARTED THE WATCH LIST BECAUSE I FELT THAT PEOPLE WEREN’T WRITING ABOUT MOVIES THE WAY WE WATCH THEM ANYMORE. >> WE MET HIM AT LEGACY PLACE TO GET HIS LATEST MOVIE PIX AND A FEW OSCAR PREDICTIONS. >> ONE BORING MAN, YOU ARE ALL BORING. >> IT’S GOT COLIN FARRELL, AS TO ALL FRIENDS AND A FISHING VILLAGE. ONE DAY HIS CHARACTER DECIDES HE IS JUST DONE WITH HIS FRIENDSHIP. COLIN FARRELL IS WONDERFUL IN IT. PLAYING A NOT VERY BRIGHT BUT KIND OF SWEET GUY WHO JUST CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING WRONG WITH HIS LIFE. SHE SAID IS ABOUT TWO NEW YORK TIMES JOURNALISTS WHO ARE DIGGING INTO THE HARVEY WEINSTEIN STORY. >> I BELIEVE YOU USED TO WORK FOR HARVEY WEINSTEIN? >> I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE I AM AN ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST WHO HAS BEEN IN THE BUSINESS FOR OVER 30 YEARS. I REMEMBER PEOPLE I KNEW IN NEW YORK TELLING THE HARVEY WEINSTEIN STORY BACK IN THE 1980’S AND 1990’S. I’M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS FILM. THE FABLEMANS IS STEVEN SPIELBERG’S ONLY BIOGRAPHICAL FILM TODAY. IT’S ABOUT A FAMILY IN THE 1960’S IN CALIFORNIA. THEY HAVE A YOUNG SON WHO ALSO GREW UP WITH MOVIES. IT’S LOVELY, IT IS HEARTFELT. >> I JUST WANT FOR EVERYONE TO PARTY FOREVER. >> IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT 1920’S HOLLYWOOD, THERE WAS DRUGS, SEX, MURDER, THERE WAS LOTS OF STUFF GOING ON THAT WOULD MAKE A VERY GOOD MOVIE. >> SIGNS ON ALL THE DOORS SAID, NO ACTORS AND DOGS ALLOWED. >> THEY WERE NOT ALL PRIM AND PROPER. THIS IS NOT THE MOVIE A LOT OF PEOPLE WANTED IT TO BE BECAUSE CHADWICK BOSEMAN DIED. THE FILMMAKER WISELY DECIDED NOT TO CAST A NEW ACTOR IN THAT ROLE. YOU CALLED THE WILL SMITH NOMINATION LAST YEAR, ANY PREDICTIONS FOR THIS YEAR? >> TOP GUN MAVERICK WILL PROBABLY BE NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE. A MOVIE THAT CAME OUT EARLIER IN THE YEAR THAT IS CALLED, EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE. IT’S A CRAZY MOVIE. IF SHE DOESN’T GET NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTRESS, I WILL EAT MY HAT. IN 2012, THE DARLING OF THE OSCARS WAS LIFE OF PI. THE STORY NOW COMES TO THE STAGE OF THE AMERICAN REPERTORY THEATER IN CAMBRIDGE, FRESH OFF A SUCCESSFUL LONDON RUN. LIFE OF PI IS THE STORY OF A YOUNG INDIAN BOY, LOST AT SEA WITH A BENGAL TIGER. FOR THE ENGLISH ACTRESS, ADAPTING THE STORY FOR THE STAGE WAS NO EASY TASK, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING HALF OF THE CAST DOESN’T SPEAK. >> WRITING THE ANIMALS WAS ONE OF THE BIG CHALLENGES. >> THE ANSWER WAS PUPPETS. EACH TAKES MULTIPLE PERFORMERS WORKING TOGETHER. >> I KNOW EMOTIONALLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE ACHIEVED AND I TRY TO WRITE THAT ON THE PAGE. >> ACTIONS OFTEN CRAFTED TO KEEP THE AUDIENCE ON THE EDGE OF THEIR SEATS. >> THE ANIMALS HAVE TO BE SCARY. THEY ARE NOT CUTE, THEY ARE NOT SESAME STREET. THEY ARE TO EXPAND THE BOUNDARIES OF THEATER AND THIS IS DEFINITELY A SHOW THAT DOES THAT. >> IF YOU CAN’T CATCH THE SHOW NOW, YOU WILL HAVE TO HEAD TO NEW YORK, BECAUSE THAT IS ITS NEXT STOP. NOT BAD FOR AN ACTRESS WHO ONLY STARTED WRITING AS A HOBBY. >> IF I HAD EXPECTATIONS, IT COMPLETELY SURPASSES THEM. SHAYNA: A LOT OF FILMS ARE STILL GOING TO — DIRECTLY TO STREAMING PLATFORMS. ANTHONY: HE SAYS IF YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE HIM EXPERIENCES WITH MOVIES, TRY TO MAKE IT A THEATER EXPERIENCE. TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS, UP WITH THE PHONES AWAY, HONOR THE WORK THAT THE ACTORS DID. AS FOR LIFE OF PI, IT’S NOT F
