Celebration of African American music historical past at College of Louisville

MORNING. YOU HAVE A REALLY UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO PART IN A MULTI-DAY CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC AT U OF L REALLY COOL EVENT THAT’S UP WE WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT IT HERE TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS THIS MORNING IS JERRY TOLSON. HE’S A PROFESSOR OF JAZZ STUDIES AND PART OF THIS UPCOMING CELEBRATION, REALLY, IT SOUNDS LIKE GOING TO BE. TELL ME ABOUT THIS EVENT. WELL, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE’VE DONE FOR 28 YEARS. THIS IS OUR 28TH YEAR DOING IT. AND THIS YEAR, WE’RE FOCUSING ON AFRICAN-AMERICAN CLASSICAL COMPOSERS AND OUR GUEST ARTIST IS A COMPOSER, LOUISIANA, BY THE NAME OF DR. HILLIARD. AND HE’S OF THE FOREST COMPOSERS, COMPOSERS, AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMPOSERS IN THE CLASSICAL REALM. THE WHAT WE TRY TO DO WITH THIS EVENT IS EXPOSE OUR STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY TO A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC, EVERYTHING FROM GOSPEL TO JAZZ TO SPIRITUALS TO R&B TO SMOOTH JAZZ. WE’VE HAD A NUMBER OF ARTISTS OVER THE YEARS. BUT PART OF IT IS JUST TO EXPOSE OUR STUDENTS TO DIVERSITY OF STYLES, OF MUSIC. AND BECAUSE AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY, THAT’S WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO DO. WHAT DO YOU THINK? PEOPLE DON’T REALLY WISE ABOUT THE AMERICAN INFLUENCE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THESE THESE CLASSICS THAT YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO BE FOCUSING ON? WELL, I THINK MANY PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF VERY FAMOUS AFRICAN-AMERICAN CLASSICAL COMPOSERS. THE MOST FAMOUS ONE IS PROBABLY WILLIAM GRANT. STILL, WHO COMPOSED A SYMPHONY THAT PERFORMED QUITE OFTEN. BUT THERE’S ALSO A NUMBER OF OTHER AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMPOSERS WHO COMPOSE IN THE CLASSICAL REALM. MOST PEOPLE THINK ABOUT AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC AND THEY THINK ABOUT SOUL OR JAZZ OR HIP HOP. AND BUT AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC HAS FORMS SUCH A FOUNDATION OF AMERICAN MUSIC IN GENERAL. MY SON HAS STARTED PIANO. HE’S TEN, AND HE’S STARTING TO PICK UP ON LITTLE NUANCES. WHEN WE LISTEN TO VARIOUS TYPES OF MUSIC, THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT THING TO BRING YOUR KIDS TO FAMILIES. IN FACT, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE TRY TO DO WITH THIS EVENT IS THAT WE TRY TO INVOLVE STUDENTS AND THIS YEAR WILL BE INVOLVING THE STUDENTS FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL. THEIR BAND WILL BE PERFORMING ON A CONCERT ON. FEBRUARY 6TH, ALONG WITH OUR OR OF OUR BAND. AND THIS IS TO EXPOSE YOUNGER STUDENTS TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH THIS COMPOSER AND TO ACTUALLY PLAY HIS MUSIC. AND IT’S GOING TO BE A FUN TIME CONCERT IS ON MONDAY FEBRUARY SIXTH AT 7 PM AND YOU MENTIONED THIS IS A MULTIDAY EVENT, SO THIS IS GOING ON FEBRUARY 2ND THROUGH THE SIXTH. WE’VE GOT THE INFORMATION THERE AND. SPECIFICALLY WHERE DO PEOPLE NEED TO GO? THEY WANT TO GO TO SOME OF THESE CONCERTS AND EVERYTHING WILL BE HELD AT THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC. MOST OF THE EVENTS WILL BE HELD IN COMIC-CON HALL, BUT WE’LL BE DOING LECTURES. DR. HILLIARD WILL BE DOING TO SOME OF THE CLASSES. WE’RE ALSO, AS A PART OF THIS EVENT, ARE GOING TO HAVE AN ALUMNI OF COLOR, STUDENTS OF COLOR WHO HAVE GRADUATED FROM U OF L WITH MUSIC DEGREES. AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A PANEL DISCUSSION WITH THEM ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES AS. AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN ATTENDING U OF L. WOW. VERY COOL. OK. AND IT’S TEN BUCKS THAT PEOPLE WANT TO GO TO CONCERT. SO THE CONCERT PORTION OF IT, EVERYTHING ELSE IS FREE. EVERYTHING ELSE THAT’S A BARGAIN. AND IT IS. I LOVE THE WORD. SO, DARYL, THANK YOU FOR HERE. WE APPRECIATE IT. AND BEST OF LUCK. 28 YEARS AND GOI
