WATERVLIET — The state attorney general’s office said that 357 guns were turned in to police stations in Watervliet, Cohoes, Colonie, Green Island, and Menands on Saturday during a community gun buyback event.
In a statement, Attorney General Letitia James said that the event was the biggest gun buyback that her office had ever done in the Capital Region. It was part of a plan to hold nine gun buybacks all over the state on the same day.
James said, “Gun violence has caused so many tragedies that could have been prevented and taken the lives of so many innocent New Yorkers.”
“We were able to set up this historic one-day gun buyback event in nine places across New York state because we worked with local law enforcement and public leaders. Every gun we took away was a possible tragedy we didn’t have to deal with, and it was another step toward keeping New York neighborhoods safe.
In addition to the guns that the attorney general’s office bought back in Albany County, they also got more than 3,000 guns from all over the state. Since 2019, the office has taken more than 7,000 guns out of New York neighborhoods.
