Saved, the Élan Béarnais remains in Betclic ELITE!

For a whole city, a region, and even for all of French basketball which saw one of its monuments threatened with disappearance, this is the good news of the evening! Élan Béarnais will evolve well in Betclic ÉLITE next season since the appeal chamber of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) has been convinced by the takeover project presented by the Eat4Good group, represented by the former secretary of State for Sports, Thierry Braillard.

“In view of recent developments in the file and the guarantees provided as to the continuity of the club’s operations, the Appeals Chamber has decided to reform the decision of the Superior Management Council of July 11, 2022 and to issue a favorable opinion on the club’s commitment to the Betclic Elite Championship for the 2022/2023 season”, communicates the FFBB. “It also seized the National Directorate of Council and Management Control of professional clubs of the LNB which will have to proceed with the validation of the budget and the supervision of the club’s payroll for the 2022/2023 season. »

And yet, Pau almost died…

Either the end of a nightmarish soap opera for the Élan Béarnais, who came very close to disappearance because of an incredible season under the American flag. At the hands of the CSG group, based in Seattle, Pau returned to its tradition of winning but found itself financially drained, on the verge of insolvency. The bottom was touched two weeks ago, during a very stormy meeting between the DNCCG and the club, where the American owners did not seem to understand the requirements of the financial policeman, where they did not speak either of a single voices with French President David Bonnemason-Carrère did not speak with one voice. Despite his policy of victimization, David Otto ended up realizing that he was the problem. At the last moment, he agreed to sell the club to Eat4Good, and “lose a lot of money”. As a summary of their passage in Béarn in short…

However, if CSG agreed to leave, it was not only because of the climate of general hostility towards them. It is also because they had been made to understand that the new project, supported by Mayor François Bayrou, presented all the guarantees necessary to maintain the Élan Béarnais in Betclic ÉLITE. In the urgent, the new majority shareholder, Sébastien Ménard, a supporter of the club who became a municipal councilor in Biarritz, succeeded in his race against the clock. The takeover plan presented by his company Eat4Good received the green light from the FFBB appeal chamber, thus simply allowing the Élan Béarnais to survive. A scare which could however have largely been avoided when we remember that the Eat4Good project was option B for the Pau Agglomeration last year, but deemed too financially fragile in the face of the Americans who were making the dream of a new era in Béarn, with great tokenization and climate technology park.

Now another emergency

The inconsistency of the Seattle investors will also have created another collateral victim: Orléans, whose recruitment is on stand-by, whose hope of remaining in Betclic ELITE has now vanished. Relegated to Pro B, as the recovery draws near, the OLB still needs to find five players… he offseason has already passed, leaving behind morally committed players like Allan Dokossi. The DNCCG will decide if the EBPLO leaves with a supervised wage bill, but the club should have an estimated budget of around 5 million euros. The coach, Éric Bartecheky, as well as five players are already under contract: Gérald Ayayi, Fabio Milanèse, Giovan Oniangue, Vitalis Chikoko and Enzo Shahrvin. The EBPLO said it had received the FFBB’s decision with “great pleasure”. “The preparation for this next season will finally be able to begin and will allow the whole club to look to the future”, adds the club. A future which, given the incredibly turbulent summer and the inevitable aftermath, still remains very vague and uncertain. But at least now that future has the merit of continuing to exist.
