“The objective is very clear: It’s to win the competition”: The French team has started its preparation for the EuroBasket and does not hide its ambitions

Gathered together since last weekend, the French men’s team has started its preparation for the EuroBasket and a qualifying window for the 2023 World Cup. The opportunity for Vincent Collet to work and refine his selection for the qualifying window and the continental tournament and the Blues to affirm that they will aim for nothing but the gold medal.

Barely a month after the defeat against Montenegro and the victory against Hungary in the qualifying match for the 2023 World Cup and almost a year to the day after winning Olympic silver, the French team began its preparation this Sunday at the Palais des Sports Maurice Thorez in Nanterre with EuroBasket 2022 in sight.

Deprived of their captain Nicholas Batum (155 selections) and their metronome Nando De Colo (185 selections), the Blues have two missions: to start the second phase of qualification for the 2023 World Cup well with two matches placed on August 24 and 27 and to confirm their status as favorites for the continental title at the Euro in the process where the competition will be denser than ever. On the occasion of the first press briefing of the preparation of the Blues, the coach Vincent Collet and the general manager of the France team, Boris Diaw swept the news of the France team.

A different preparation

With a double objective end to the summer, it is clear that the French team is somewhat shaken up, in addition to having already registered the withdrawals of Victor Wembanyama and Andrew Albicy: “ The doctor has already started doing it with two players. For the other three, it is not yet established. But today, we must congratulate those present for their professionalism because they arrived in rather good condition. An unprecedented preparation therefore which will lead the Blues to the two qualifying matches for the 2023 World Cup and where you will have to be ready, from the first matches before starting the Euro: “ We’ll have to be ready at the window. We should not use the last matches, as we usually do before EuroBasket, to make the final adjustments, remarked general manager Boris Diaw. We will have to be efficient immediately.” “We are playing on the 27th against Bosnia, whereas it is normally already a period when we should be working on Germany, that will not be the case. We will start on the 28th… and in addition we will be recovering,” added Vincent Collet.

A clearly established objective: the gold medal

The blues continue to repeat their ranges before the first deadline, the friendly match against the Netherlands this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in Rouen, and will already have to defend their status as favorites and Olympic vice-champions that they acquired in Tokyo in summer 2021. “The objective is not simple, but at least it is clear. I’m tired of bronze medals, we want gold,” advanced Rudy Gobert, who will be one of the leaders of this window with Evan Fournier to take over from Nicolas Batum and Nando De Colo. “The objective is very clear: It is to win the competition. With the French team, we have very high objectives […] We are one of the favourites, the teams know us very well, there will be no surprises. The France team is one of the big nations,” declared Evan Fournier.

An adversity that carries the same dreams of greatness

While Slovenia fell into the pool of France, the latter will be revengeful after their defeat in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games (89-90) while nations such as Greece led by Giannis Antetokounmpo as well as Serbia by Nikola Jokic will also have their say. A EuroBasket which promises to be one of the toughest and which provides for great battles as Evan Fournier admitted: “I think it’s great that all the leaders are present. This will give good publicity for European basketball, the EuroBasket is becoming a flagship competition. For the team that wins, it will give them a lot more credit because objectively it will be one of the most successful EuroBaskets in history.

“The fact of only doing one Euro per Olympiad (since 2017) gives more importance to this competition, noted Vincent Collet. In time, the Euro post Olympic was less raised than the Euro pre Olympic. We can see that this year, everyone is preparing their weapons. There are teams that are really impressive on paper. Even though we have the highest goals possible, that of winning, we know the difficulty of the task. What is important is to prepare ourselves for what awaits us with ambition. We know very well that the obstacles will be tough and from the start. The work of the twelve elected officials will have to take these parameters into account, but in the meantime the French team remains more focused than ever on its objective despite the absences and will have to fight its way to glory: “It’s up to us to invent this path, to rewrite our history.»
